What many people think
Punctuation is just for pausing to breathe; the words carry all the meaning.
The idea
Punctuation is part of the meaning: it decides where the pauses fall, who is speaking and what is asked, so the same characters can say opposite things.
Explain it
Write 「小林说我画得最好」 for someone, once with 说：“ ” and once without. Ask them who 我 is each time, and explain why it changes.
Try at home
Write a short sentence on paper without punctuation, cut out marks from sticky notes, and take turns placing them. Read each version aloud — who can make it say the opposite?
