You don't need every word

EN-4 Getting the gist is enoughX-1 Guess, then check
What many people think

If you miss one word, you have not understood.

The idea

Knowing most of the words is enough to follow a story; the unknown ones often explain themselves from context.

Try it yourself

Explain it

Tell someone about a time you understood an English story, song or video without knowing every word. Which words did you skip, and what helped you guess them?

Try at home

Listen to a short English story or cartoon once without stopping. Write down 3 words you didn't know and a guess for each from context. Then check them in a dictionary: how many guesses were close?
