One sound, several spellings

What many people think

Each sound has only one spelling.

The idea

The same sound can be written in more than one way: rain, play and cake share one vowel sound, and position helps choose — ay usually ends a word, ai sits inside.

Try it yourself

Explain it

A friend writes "plai" and "rayn". Using what you counted, explain which spelling goes where — and why both look possible.

Try at home

Make three paper bins labelled ai, ay and a_e. Hunt for long a words in a picture book and drop a slip with each word in the right bin. Which bin fills fastest?
