Read a place from its climate graph

GEO-2 Places differ, and there are reasonsX-2 Evidence outweighs opinion
What many people think

Places at the same latitude have the same climate.

The idea

Twelve bars of rain and a line of temperature tell you the climate type, and the climate tells you what grows there.

Explain it

A friend says Beijing and Lisbon must have the same weather because both are near 40°N. Use the two climate graphs to explain why you would pack an umbrella for Lisbon in January but for Beijing in July.

Try at home

Find your town's monthly rain and temperature on a weather service's climate page and draw its climate graph on squared paper: 12 bars and one line. Which of the five types is it closest to? What do farmers grow nearby?
