What many people think

North always means 'up', on a map and on the ground.

The idea

North is a direction on the ground, not "up": turn the map until its north arrow points north, then a letter and a number pin down any square.

Try it yourself

Explain it

A friend holds the park map with the N arrow pointing at their feet and says: "North is up, so the pond is straight ahead." Tell them how to find which way north really is, and how "B4" helps them find the pond.

Try at home

Draw your room on squared paper. Write A, B, C… across the bottom and 1, 2, 3… up the side, and add an N arrow (a phone compass can tell you north). Hide a toy and give a grown-up the square, like "C2". Then turn the paper round: is your N arrow still right?
