Where earthquakes happen

What many people think
Earthquakes can happen anywhere equally.
The idea
Earthquakes and volcanoes line up along the edges of plates, so a map of them draws the plates for you.
Explain it
A friend says an earthquake is just as likely anywhere. Use the dot map to explain why Japan and Chile get big quakes but central Australia almost never does.
Try at home
Put two crackers side by side on a plate. Push them together, pull them apart, slide them past each other. Where do the crumbs and cracks appear — in the middle or at the edges?
