How a river bends itself

GEO-2 Places differ, and there are reasonsGEO-4 People change places, and places change peopleX-2 Evidence outweighs opinion
What many people think

A river wears away both banks of a bend equally.

The idea

In a bend the water runs fastest on the outside, which wears the bank away, and slowest on the inside, which drops sand — so bends grow and wander.

Try it yourself

Explain it

A friend wants to build a house right at the edge of a river bend, on the outside, for the view. Use what you saw to explain what may happen, and where you would build instead.

Try at home

In a sandpit or a tray of damp sand, scrape a curved channel and pour water slowly in at one end. Where on the curve is sand washed away, and where does it settle?
