What many people think

The past was one unchanging ‘before’, and modern times changed everything at once.

The idea

Different parts of life change at different speeds: how fast people could travel or how they lit their homes changed within a few generations, while staple foods, languages and family customs often lasted for centuries.

Explain it

A friend says: “In the old days nothing changed, then modern times changed everything.” Use two rows from the board — one that changed fast and one that hardly changed — to answer them.

Try at home

Ask an older relative to compare their childhood with today for: travel, lighting, the main food, how news arrives, a family festival. Which changed a lot, and which stayed the same?
