What travelled the Silk Roads?

What many people think

The Silk Road was one road that merchants travelled from end to end.

The idea

The Silk Roads were a web of routes; goods, ideas, religions and inventions passed hand to hand through chains of traders, and few people travelled the whole way.

Try it yourself

Explain it

A friend says “a merchant took silk along the Silk Road from China to Rome”. Use the trader counter and the price from this page to explain what really happened, and why the price went up so much.

Try at home

Play “pass it on” with your family: whisper a short message along a line of people, or pass a cup of rice and let each person keep one spoonful as their “fee”. How much arrives at the end of 3 people? Of 6?
