The earliest clay tablets from Mesopotamia mostly record goods, rations and accounts — writing began as a tool for keeping track, not for telling stories.
Explain it
A friend says “writing was invented so people could write down stories and poems.” Use what you found on this page, with one number, to explain what the earliest writing was for and why it was needed.
Try at home
Ask someone to read you 10 shopping items with amounts (3 apples, 2 loaves…) without you writing. Write down what you remember. Then do it again with tally marks and a little picture for each item. Which list is right?
