Heavy things sink, light things float.
The idea
Whether something floats depends on how heavy it is for its size, not on how heavy it is.
Explain it
A big log floats but a small nail sinks. Explain why to a friend without using the word 'heavy'.

Fill a bowl with water. Test an apple, a coin, a lump of clay, then the same clay pressed into a boat shape.
