Where does the sugar go?

SCI-1 Everything is made of tiny particlesX-1 Guess, then checkX-2 Evidence outweighs opinion
What many people think

Sugar disappears when it dissolves.

The idea

Dissolved sugar breaks into particles too small to see, spread through the water; the scale shows the total weight does not change.

Try it yourself

Explain it

A friend says the sugar disappeared because you can’t see it any more. Use the scale reading and the word “particles” to explain where the sugar went, and how you could get it back.

Try at home

Put a glass of water on a kitchen scale and note the reading. Add two spoons of sugar and note it again. Stir until it dissolves: the reading stays the same. Taste a sip. Then leave a little on a saucer in a warm place for a few days and look for sugar crystals.
